"How can we create an original adventure game?"
Today, we will introduce our afterschool lesson called Project Work.
Each project has a driving question and this project's question was "How can we create an original adventure game?" Students were discussing, researching and learning with friends and teachers through this question. One project continues for up to four months and teachers guide lesson based on students' interests.
Here is a report from the teachers.
In these initial weeks, students worked together to brainstorm ideas for their student choice project. After generating seven ideas, they voted to choose the adventure game as their project. Subsequently, they delved into the mechanics of adventure games, created character sheets, and laid the foundation for their unique game world.
During this period, students continued developing their characters, including races, classes, and backstories. They also expanded their vocabulary to understand the intricacies of adventure games. Concurrently, they brainstormed and designed the game world, creating a giant map. Detailed information sheets for various locations on the map were also developed, leading to a more immersive gaming experience.
With the guidance of Mr. Dan, students delved into character stats, establishing base stats and finalizing them based on ability points. They also designed monsters and items to populate their game world. With a better grasp of the game's mechanics, students finally launched their adventure and began to immerse themselves in the world they had created.
During these weeks, students actively collaborated to tackle in-game challenges, solve problems, and progress in their adventure. Their proficiency in role-playing and game dynamics improved significantly. They also took a break to savor ice cream from the second-grade ice cream shop.
In this week, the adventure reached new heights as students collaboratively overcame challenges, solved mysteries, and interacted with NPCs. Meeting an old sage, they learned crucial revelations that would drive their adventure forward. The entire journey was an exciting exploration of creativity, learning, teamwork, and growth, as students crafted a unique world and embarked on an immersive adventure..
