The First Day at CGK Afterschool

Afterschool April 15, 2020

Here is a look at the first day of CGK Afterschool, which opened on April 6, 2020!

We enjoyed many activities with seven children on the first day. As CGK Preschool graduates, they were excited to be reunited, smiling and hugging one another.
At the time, Afterschool used an admission interview to maintain a shared level of English. From the very first day, the classroom was full of English, both in conversations with the teacher and among friends. Some children were delighted to use English again, while others were a little shy after a break, but all appeared to be enjoying themselves.
Curious about their new school, they kept asking the teacher what they would do next: “What’s after this?”

After singing together while the musically talented Bobby played the ukulele and enjoying some movement, the children had a snack and gathered for Circle Time. We checked the day’s schedule before beginning the lesson.

The main activity at Afterschool was Project Work, with five subjects: Art, Job Training, Social Studies, Science and Moral Education. In each subject, children would spend two months researching and thinking about a theme while learning together with their friends.

The Art theme was “Word Art.” The children would interpret the meanings and feelings expressed in words and pictures, before creating their own meaningful Word Art as a final project.

In the first lesson, we interpreted the feelings expressed by different emojis. Facial expressions make some meanings easy to recognise, but questions such as “How do you know this emoji is happy?” encouraged the children to think carefully and share their ideas.

At the end of the lesson, everyone designed an original emoji and presented it to the group. They seemed to enjoy creating a design and giving it meaning.

In the days ahead, different subjects would continue to spark their curiosity!

We look forward to the learning and experiences ahead.
