Italian Restaurant Experience 2020

Once again, CGK’s food education program brought us to the Italian restaurant Primo, which kindly supports our activities. We reserved the entire restaurant for our Italian restaurant experience.
This was our second year at Primo and our third restaurant experience overall.

This year, 61 people from 20 families took part across three sessions.
In addition to this event, Primo also visits the school to lead pasta-making activities.

When the restaurant opened, the children arrived with their parents looking a little nervous. Asked by the staff, “What name is the reservation under?”, they showed a shy, nervous side that we do not usually see.

The experience featured a full-course menu, with dishes served one at a time. To help the children understand the ingredients, the staff explained them using pictures as well as words. This year’s dishes included trumpet mushrooms, which really do look like trumpets, and the children listened with great interest.

Because the restaurant was reserved exclusively for our event, a little noise or getting up from the table was fine. The children enjoyed chatting with friends and peeking into the kitchen to watch the chefs at work.
Being able to see the chefs preparing the food they were about to eat was a special part of this experience.

  
 
Food education begins with the most important idea: enjoying meals. From there, children learn that good manners help everyone enjoy eating together.
Eating quietly and consistently following table manners, such as sitting appropriately and handling tableware, can still be difficult for young children. Through events like this and daily life at school, we want to help them learn while enjoying their meals.
