Life Skills: Learning to Clean Together

As the three-year-olds became more independent in caring for themselves, they also grew interested in helping others.
We therefore began lessons about cleaning.
After introducing words such as broom, dustpan and rag, we talked about how to use each tool.
The children did not yet know the word sweep, so they tried to answer using gestures.
They listened carefully as Kevin explained using a broom and dustpan for rubbish on the floor and a cloth for spilled water.
Then it was time to try! They worked in pairs with a broom and dustpan and enthusiastically wiped the floor and their own cubbies.
Beyond new English vocabulary, these lessons aim to teach the importance of keeping shared rooms clean and caring for the things we use.
