Little Scientists: Are These Stones Big or Small?

As part of our active-learning Job Training program, the children became scientists and went with Kevin and Ash on a walk to look for stones.
When they found stones, we heard excited discoveries such as:
“I found it!”
"It's small!“
These were the voices of our curious little scientists.
The investigation was Big and Small. Back at school, we sorted the collected stones by size.
The children became absorbed in putting small stones on red paper and large stones on blue paper.
They could not yet read, but showing written words, as in the photograph, still served a purpose (please excuse the handwriting!).
Rather than thinking that writing is unnecessary before children can read, we show it to two-year-olds to encourage interest.
Recently, our Japanese lessons had also introduced written dates and days of the week, including kanji, and the children were very curious.
We aim to connect lessons rather than treat them as isolated activities, as this link between outdoor play and Job Training demonstrates.
