Mountain and Ocean: Learning Through Mixed-Age Play

One summer day, Mountain class (age 4) and Ocean class (age 2) went together to Kitanakadori-kita No. 2 Park. It was their first outing together, and the children were excited from the morning. Ocean children changed their shoes faster than usual and waited at the entrance, asking whether their Mountain friends were ready yet.
With older Mountain friends holding their hands on both sides, the Ocean children began walking with happy, slightly shy smiles. Mountain children confidently led the way, raised their hands at crossings and encouraged the younger children with, “Nearly there! Keep going!” Thanks to their support, the walk to the park went smoothly.
After a group photograph, we played on the climbing frame and enjoyed a little water play. Mountain children filled spray bottles, and everyone enjoyed the refreshing mist. We also filled empty mayonnaise bottles to draw with water on the ground. Ocean children watched in amazement as their older friends climbed to the top of the frame. They wanted to climb that high too, but felt a little nervous. “Mountain is amazing!” they said admiringly.
On the way back, everyone held hands, followed traffic rules and returned safely. When Ocean thanked Mountain for playing with them, the older children looked delighted and proud. We ended with hugs, promises to play together again and smiling goodbyes.
We have continued to include mixed-age activities like this. They offer valuable experiences for both groups and encourage positive attitudes toward one another.
Learning from teachers and same-age friends is important, but we also want to value the awareness and relationships that grow when children interact across age groups.
