Opening Dance at a Philippine Theater Event: Extracurricular Class

About six months before the performance, the children in our weekly extracurricular class were invited to perform the opening dance for a production I, dance teacher Anna, was producing: the Philippine theater event “Prism VII: little smile,” a story of small acts of courage based on Payatas ni Furu Hoshi.

Their concentration during dance practice was still uneven at first, and I felt some concern. But as the December 9, 2017 performance approached, their focus and dancing improved greatly.
On the day, they confidently performed two dances of just under three minutes in front of 145 audience members. They took on a new challenge, danced well and worked very hard.
Children’s energy can be astonishing. Some said they had felt nervous, while others simply said it had been fun.
I had worried that someone might become too overwhelmed to dance, but once the performance began, everyone smiled and enjoyed it. The audience responded with plenty of applause.
I believe having such an unusual opportunity at ages three and four can enrich the children’s lives in the years ahead.
Their growth was also clear in the lessons that followed.
Performers often say that a real stage experience can teach something that hundreds of rehearsals cannot.
The children became quicker at learning new songs, and I am excited about our future lessons!
