Getting Ready for Our Sarushima Family BBQ Outing

A CGK family outing to Sarushima, an uninhabited island off Yokosuka, was planned for late May.
Showing a map of the destination, we asked whether anyone knew what an island was. One child answered, “A place with a mountain!”

Using the map, we explained that we would need to take a boat to Sarushima.
We then showed shells collected during our advance visit. The children excitedly examined their different sizes, colors and shapes.
Because the outing would include a barbecue, we brought out a pretend barbecue set for a little “practice.”
The children could put pretend meat, vegetables and other favorites onto straw skewers. These objects and activities helped their anticipation grow.
We planned to compare shell sizes in later lessons and learn related vocabulary in English.
The outing would be more than a happy memory: it would also offer many opportunities to learn and experience new things.
We were also practicing the song “Ensoku” in preparation for the family trip.
