The Second CGK Sports Day

Despite rain in the morning, we successfully held the second CGK Sports Day on November 23. Thank you to all the families who joined us.
By the time we left, blue skies had appeared—as if in recognition of the children’s hard work!
Ocean (age 2) and Jungle (age 3) had practiced many times. They were especially excited to show parents, grandparents and other family members what they could do.
We began with the entrance march they had practiced so much.
Swinging their arms to the whistle, the children marched in confidently. Some waved to family members holding cameras, while others looked a little shy, but it was their best entrance yet. The applause made them visibly happy.
Next came a favorite warm-up dance, Ebikanics.
Some felt shy in front of so many parents, but their energetic shrimp-and-crab movements and jumps were delightful. They moved their bodies well in preparation for the events. We hope families could see a little of the fun they have dancing at school.
For the running races, children answered “Here!” loudly and ran with all their effort. Whether they finished first or second, their proud smiles were wonderful.
Even when running straight or starting quickly was difficult, their determination shone through.
Ocean’s class event was “Shopping!” Children pulled a basket, collected apples, oranges and bananas, then headed for the finish. The basket was larger than their bodies, but repeated practice had helped them enjoy the challenge, and they gave it their all.
At an age when they still need plenty of teacher support, pulling the basket by themselves showed how much they had grown.
Jungle’s obstacle course included a forward roll from their Olympia PE lessons, a tunnel and a final soccer shot into the goal. Watching their determined efforts to keep up with friends, we found ourselves cheering loudly too.
Parents from both classes joined the tug-of-war. With enthusiastic cheering from the children, the red and white teams each won a round. The close contest brought families and school together.
The parent-and-child events that followed showed how much children enjoyed taking part with their families.
For Jungle, pairs stepped into two joined hoops and matched their strides as they ran.
Ocean children held tightly to their parents as they were carried at nearly full running speed. Their expressions were lovely to watch.
The final main event was Jungle’s red-versus-white relay.
Remembering their team and running order, then passing the baton, the three-year-olds showed families how much they had learned.
We felt proud all over again of the many practices and efforts that led to this day.
Sports Day revealed more than physical growth. We saw the desire to win, the wish to encourage teammates and many other developing feelings.
We hope children continue discovering the enjoyment of movement through Olympia, outdoor play and a variety of sports.
