Learning to Brush: A Lesson for Cavity Prevention Day

June 4 is known in Japan as Cavity Prevention Day, using the sounds of the numbers six and four to suggest mushi, part of the word for a cavity.
June 4 to 10 is also Dental and Oral Health Week.
We therefore focused on teeth during the month.
We read the picture-card story “Shirowan Kurowan Hamigaki Shusshu” and used paper puppets to discuss what happens when teeth are not brushed, including dirt in the mouth and cavities.
Coloring over a picture of a dirty mouth with a white crayon helped the children think about cleaning their teeth.
They also discovered the fun of using white crayons, which they do not often use.
Everyone became enthusiastic about brushing after meals, and during free play they even brushed a toy crocodile’s teeth.
Because the condition of baby teeth can affect permanent teeth, we will continue conveying the importance of tooth care through daily brushing and activities.
