Job Training: How Movies Influence Our Feelings

Afterschool April 27, 2021

Here is an introduction to lessons at CGK Afterschool.

CGK's eight-week-long project works will be based on the main “Driving Question”.

Here are the Driving Questions for this "Job Training" lesson.

"How can we change people's feelings by movies?"

The lesson theme was "Film director."

We followed this theme and question with fun lessons each week that drew the student's interest.

Here are the comments of Mr. Bobby, the teacher who was in charge of the lessons.

Week 1

Students began to think about what a director does. Students used a zoom in question making method on what a director is and does. Students thought about what to ask Ms. Freedman for their interview.

Week 2

Students interviewed and asked questions to Ms. Freedman during their zoom called. The class learned about being a director and working on films.

Week 3

Students were introduced to the final project packet. Creating a 15 second stop motion film and began to work through the activity book starting with an introduction to the final project.

Week 4

Students worked on their rough drafts of their ideas and broken into groups. Using what they know about being a director the students began to think of ideas for their final race. Students discussed their ideas and began to build out their storyboards.

Week 5

Students worked on their final project building out their scenes and how their short film will go. Students checked in with their work with me before finalizing their work on their projects. Students created their sets and began to work building out their shots.

Week 6

Students began to film their project and work on completing their set designs. Students shot using the regular camera on their iPads and did not use stop motion studio in building their final.

Week 7, 8

Students learned how to use iMovie to create their stop motion video instead of using stop-motion studio. Students created their own titles and end credits. After finishing their project they added sound and music. When finished the groups were allowed to use stop motion studio to create another video.

In the final presentation, each group presented the video they had created and reflected on what they had learned in the process of production. Finally, the teachers presented certificates to the students who had completed their projects. Certificates were presented to each student, including awards for best director and best actor or actress.

Working together with friends to create a single work of art requires good planning and communication skills, but all the groups were able to enjoy working on it.

I hope that the experience of learning and thinking about the job of "film director" has broadened the student's perspectives and helped them grow.
