Halloween 2019

Preschool November 10, 2019

Our Halloween event took place on Saturday, October 26. Throughout October, the children looked forward to the day as they enjoyed Halloween lessons, sang enthusiastically, and made trick-or-treat bags and decorations.

Everyone arrived in adorable favorite costumes. Some children looked a little surprised by their teachers’ costumes as the event began! Because of the venue’s capacity, we held separate sessions for Jungle, Mountain and Sky classes, in that order.

Immediately after the opening, Hannah led a multicultural study session introducing Halloween traditions and a quiz. Parents and children learned more about Halloween together.

Then came the long-awaited games! The teachers had prepared many imaginative activities. In “Mystery Jack-O-Lantern,” children guessed which of four pumpkin pots held the prize. In “Find the Skull in the Hay,” they searched for hidden skulls. “Air Gun” challenged them to knock down ghosts with an air cannon made from a plastic bottle, while “Spider Race” had parents and children use an air pump to move a toy spider to the finish. Other activities included “Witch Hat Ring Toss” and the target game “Monster Mash.” Cheers of “Yeah!”, “I did it!” and “I won!” came from every booth. The trick-or-treat room contained three little spaces inside a dark room. The children looked relieved after bravely saying “Trick or treat!” and receiving their sweets.

The games finished with a whole-class activity called “Spooky Smelly Stinky Snakes,” inspired by the doughnut-eating games enjoyed at Halloween in Western countries. John had brought colorful, sweet gummy snakes from his home country, Australia. It was adorable to watch the children trying hard to eat them using only their mouths, without their hands. The especially sweet treats brought big smiles! After the children’s turn, parents joined in too. They had to eat both a sweet gummy and an unusually flavored piece of liquorice, which prompted some memorable grimaces. Thank you so much for taking part and making the room so lively!

We ended with a new addition this year: a costume fashion show, followed by songs and dances. Still a little shy, the Jungle children walked in pairs holding hands and struck bashful poses. The Mountain and Sky children confidently walked the runway one at a time to the music, posing like models. They looked wonderfully cool!
For the final performances, Jungle presented “This Is Halloween,” Mountain performed “Spooky Time,” and Sky danced to “Ghostbusters.” Each class received plenty of clapping and applause, bringing the event to a close with a sense of satisfaction and achievement.

Although we changed the format from our usual parade, many families told us afterward how much they had enjoyed it. Thank you for preparing the costumes and for joining us in such large numbers.
