Frequently Asked Questions from Parents

Language-related Questions (Includes Admission-related Matters)

What is the ratio of English to Japanese used in the school?

English is used exclusively except for the 1 hour of Japanese class per day.

Is the official language of the school English?

Yes. English proficiency is required for admission, but Japanese proficiency is not required. All students, teachers, and staff are expected to communicate in English.

Is there any support for students who are not proficient in English?

Students with English proficiency below a certain standard will be provided with an EAL (English as an additional language) support teacher during English lessons. If the student needs help in other classes, the teacher will join the student and provide support. There is a fee for EAL support, so please see the Admissions page for details.

What kind of English proficiency will the students have upon graduating Elementary school?

Students acquire high enough English proficiency to attend a local school overseas. In middle school, students will participate in a study abroad program, so our goal is for them to be proficient enough to take classes in English.

How much English or Japanese ability do parents need?

Parents/guardians are not required to be proficient in either Japanese or English, but must be able to communicate in one language or the other. Since the homeroom teachers are foreign nationals, they may provide class information in English, but it’s possible to use an application with an automatic translation function or, if necessary, a Japanese speaking teacher can provide support.
Also, important notices are provided in both Japanese and English.

How much English / Japanese language support will be needed at home?

At CGK, we do not expect any kind of special language support at home. We ask that you create an environment in which your child can enjoy either English or Japanese at home. We can provide advice if you wish to provide language support at home, so please feel free to contact us.

Curriculum & Events

What is the IB (International Baccalaureate) curriculum?

The IB curriculum provides an all-round education to nurture internationally-minded individuals that can make a global contribution. Please click here to see more about IB Education.

What kind of textbooks are used?

Basically, we don’t use textbooks. We prepare worksheets and other necessary teaching materials on a case-by-case basis, as we do not follow a textbook but rather the interests of the children during class. For our Japanese language class we plan to purchase textbooks approved by the Japanese government, but our student-centered policy will remain the same.

Will the classes be taught in accordance with Japanese curriculum guidelines?

Japanese (language) and mathematics (taught in English) will be taught with reference to government guidelines for education. Our classes are held in such a way that there is no major difference in progress between public / private elementary schools, but we do not cover all of the contents found in official textbooks.

How much Japanese language instruction is provided?

There is 1 hour of Japanese class per day. All other classes are basically taught in English.

Please explain about the school’s long vacations.

Long vacations are approximately 5 weeks for summer vacation, 2 weeks for winter vacation, and 1 week for spring vacation, similar to the long vacations of public elementary schools in Japan. After enrollment, students will receive a yearly calendar, please refer to it for details.

Are there programs my child can participate in during long vacations?

CGK’s Seasonal Afterschool will be open for elementary school students to attend. We also offer a variety of optional short-term study abroad programs.

Are there any club activities?

At the moment, the CGK Afterschool is the only activity scheduled, but we may reconsider this in the future.

Are there any events for parents to attend?

We will be holding Sports Day, recitals, and other activities that parents can participate in and/or observe.
