For children aged 2–5, what does inquiry look like in the early years?
At CGK International School in Yokohama, children learn through questions, play, relationships, and hands-on experiences. Our Open School introduces families to the IB PYP approach, daily life at our international preschool, and the care and learning environment children experience at CGK.

Art, light, movement—and learning beyond the classroom.
At teamLab Borderless, CGK Middle School students explored how technology can become creative expression. Sharing the experience also meant practising communication, collaboration and self-management.
Sky Class (5-year-olds) explored world flags, cultures and the history of places, then created airplanes and boats of their own. Curiosity about the world became thinking and making.
CGK Afterschool students explored six types of simple machines around the school, then used their discoveries to begin building hydraulic and pneumatic machines in teams.

Learning does not only happen inside the classroom.
CGK Middle School students observed the structure, height, shapes, patterns, and design of Tokyo Tower. The visit gave them a chance to see how mathematical ideas from class are used in the design and construction of a landmark they could experience for themselves.
Looking at a familiar city from a new perspective can make mathematics feel much more tangible.
A new school meal can feel like a very big experience when you are two. At CGK, we approach that transition with curiosity, play, and patience. 🍎
Ocean Class explored food through picture books, conversations about favorite fruits and vegetables, pretend picnics and meals, and hands-on sensory experiences. Real vegetables invited close observation; colorful spaghetti became an art material; a pretend farm helped children consider where food comes from.
These activities do more than introduce nutrition. Touch, texture, language, and shared play help young learners understand the world, express preferences, collaborate with friends, and approach unfamiliar foods with growing confidence.
Thoughtful early-years education meets children where they are. By letting them first explore food through familiar stories, sensory play, and imagination, teachers support wellbeing and a positive relationship with new experiences.
Sky Class began with one farming experience: planting seeds in soil at a traditional farm. Their next visit looked completely different. Inside an LED farm, our five-year-olds observed vegetables growing with water, nutrients, and carefully controlled light.
The value was not simply seeing new technology. Students compared two systems, asked questions, connected new observations with previous experience, and considered how innovation can change the way communities produce food.
Then inquiry became something they could taste. At the LED restaurant, children designed pancakes with ingredients grown at the farm, connecting a method of cultivation directly to the food on their plates.
Through the IB Primary Years Programme unit Where We Are in Place and Time, history and innovation became visible, memorable—and delicious.
A first presentation is more than a final product—it is a first step toward sharing ideas with confidence. 🎤
During Term 1, our Afterschool students explored original cities, the human body, fantasy worlds and careers, life in the future, and space. Behind every recorded presentation was a full learning process: planning time, creating, preparing what to say, and finding the courage to speak to an audience.
Grade 2 students also became supportive role models for their new Grade 1 classmates, patiently helping them learn how to use unfamiliar tools safely and responsibly.
Some students began the term feeling shy or uncertain. Every one of them completed the challenge.
At CGK Afterschool, creativity, practical skills, collaboration, and confidence grow together—one project at a time.
“I did it by myself!” can be a small sentence with a big meaning.
For our three-year-olds in Jungle Class, learning to wear the new school uniform became a lesson in independence. Before the first uniform day, children explored what a uniform is and practised finding sleeves, fastening buttons, and turning clothes the right way out.
Teachers demonstrate when needed, then leave space for each child to pause, try again, and solve the next step. With more opportunities to change for water play, everyday routines become authentic chances to build coordination, persistence, and confidence.
At CGK, thoughtful care includes giving children room to say, “Let me try,” while making sure support is always close by.
Each button fastened is more than a practical skill. It is another experience of “I can.”
What happens when your country has plenty of oil—but not enough food?
In Grade 4, students created their own countries, complete with names, flags, cities, and cultures. Then the Continental Council began.
With limited resources, the students had to trade, negotiate, cooperate, and protect their communities. Unexpected events added another layer of complexity, reminding them that real decisions rarely come with one perfect answer.
Connected to the IB transdisciplinary theme Sharing the Planet, this project transformed global relationships from something students read about into something they could experience, question, and understand.
At CGK, learning is not only about knowing more. It is about thinking carefully, listening to different perspectives, and making responsible choices.
In Mountain Class, our four-year-olds are not simply memorizing the alphabet. Beginning with SATPIN, they explore how letters look, how they sound, and how sounds connect to make meaning.
Through rhymes, sound blending, hands-on learning centers, and purposeful play, children discover patterns and begin to read and write with growing independence. Teachers observe each learner carefully and adjust the challenge to their individual stage and interests.
This is inquiry-based early literacy at CGK: strong foundations, joyful participation, and the confidence to ask, try, and keep learning.
